Traveling the world is a dream for many people; it’s an extraordinary opportunity to get a taste of other cultures and see how other people live this thing called life. As amazing as hands-on international experience can be, it’s hard to come by due to rising travel costs. But what if the experience came to you? That’s the goal for the Idaho International Summerfest, an annual celebration of music, dance, and culture. Set in Rexburg, the festival is celebrating their 30th anniversary, and the lineup for this year promises to be a fun and fabulous time for folks of all ages.

The week-long festivities kick off on July 11 with the Color in Motion 5k, a race-turned-party where runners start the race in clean white shirts and finish it covered in a rainbow of colorful powders. On the same day, there’s also Band-a-Mania, where musicians both local and international will show off their music-making skills in Porter Park. That evening, official opening ceremonies for Summerfest will begin and spectators will have a chance to mix and mingle with dance teams from all over the world and learn a few dance steps of their own.

The celebration continues with the International Parade of Dancers on July 13, complete with a street festival with yummy food and international wares for all to see. Youth Culture workshops will also be held in Rigby on July 14 and in Rexburg on July 17, where the youth of the community can meet the dance team and learn about customs and culture of each nation.

This year’s Summerfest also includes a visit to Jackson Hole on July 15, where dance teams will perform in the town square and in a gala performance at the Jackson Center for the Arts. Other gala performances and matinees will return to Rexburg on July 17 and 18 at the Madison High School Performing Arts Center.

Other can’t-miss events for Summerfest include a humanitarian project on July 16, where the community will come together to put together gifts and packages for orphanages in Ecuador, Haiti, and Africa. There’s also the Hurdle for Hope 5k on July 18, an intense obstacle course race where all proceeds benefit the same orphanages as the humanitarian project. And if you’re down to go dancing yourself, don’t miss Dancing Under the Stars at Hemming Village, featuring DJ LT Smooth putting down the perfect summer jams to move to.

Most of the events at Summerfest are free, so don’t miss the opportunity to dive headfirst into international culture and take a vacation in our own backyard. Don’t miss out!
