Inflatable Floats on the South Fork

Portable pontoons perfect for exploring local waters

IFM staffers recently threw down on some inflatable pontoon boats to help fish and photograph some of our favorite waters around East Idaho. Top of the list: the South Fork of the Snake River. For our first mid-summer float, we launched just below the dam and coursed down to Conant Boat Ramp. The famous salmon fly hatch was keeping anglers busy down in the river's canyon section, but we weren't so lucky: The few fish we caught appeared to be gorging themselves on the nymph stage of the insect. (One cutthroat we caught actually had a nymph visible halfway down its throat.) Fishing on the South Fork can be dicey early in the season. The flows out of Palisades Dam can be erratic at times, but it only gets better as we make our way into autumn. Hope to see you out there! --S. Smede
