The Lost River Range is intimidating. It hosts seven peaks over 12,000 feet in elevation. It’s steep, rugged country and bighorn sheep hunters who venture here are just as rugged.

“Bighorn sheep like high rocky, I call it nasty country,” says Gerald Walters, Idaho Fish and Game and U.S. Forest Service wild sheep data collector. “They get up as high as they can on this range above 10,000 feet. They’re up in the middle of God’s country on top of the world.”

Susan Collins felt on top of the world when she drew one of Idaho’s six coveted Lost River bighorn sheep tags. She spent eight days in the mountains, hiking 10 miles a day.

“It was just a great hunt,” she says. “Everywhere we went we were able to get into the sheep and we were able to size them up and say, ‘Yeah, we can do better. We’ll wait.’ I think we saw 40 rams while we were hunting.”
