Hikers and horses use Big Elk Creek Trail often. For some it’s just a day ride through woods and wildflowers. For others, it’s catching fish in the creek. For the rare wanderer after a hearty adventure, it’s the goats. Mountain goats mingle on the rocky cliffs around Big Elk.
“I think that’s part of the appeal for me and keeps me coming back to the alpine country,” says Curtis Hendricks, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, regional wildlife manager. “You get up there and it’s so big, it’s amazing. It’s incredible country.”
