The Dalai Lama, the Tao, the Koran, God, healing crystals, the Bible, spirits of the earth, the Way—whoever (or whatever) you believe in, Healing Hands Reiki and Massage (HHRM) is a place for anyone and everyone to convene to share ideas about life, love and happiness.
Started by four sisters in November of 2007 (Kristi Brower, Kara Burrows, Ronda Knudsen, and Katie Weaver), the business has grown so much that they’ve had to move twice in the past three years to accommodate the increasing demand for the metaphysical store.
A Growing Business
When the sisters first started their business, they were open only on Saturdays because they were also maintaining their day jobs. “After we first discussed opening a business, our husbands were nervous…after all, this was an adventure into the unknown. One of our husbands, who had an MBA, made us write a business plan,” Weaver laughed. “We had no idea what a business plan was but at least we came up with a mission.”
Their mission? Bringing love and light to those they touch.
Working from a small downtown office and then relocating to a larger office in 2009, the owners moved to their current downtown location on Park and B street in May of 2010. “Once we opened our store with the street front, it has done so much for us,” Burrows shares.
In the beginning, there was no intent to become a retailer. “When we were working in the back at our other locations, we kept referring people on where to go to purchase products we recommended. So we just started carrying them on our own,” Burrows shares. The retail part of their business includes books, cards, jewelry, essential oils, etc.
“Our first goal is to build a community where like-minded people can come together,” Weaver says. “This can be a lonely town if you don’t find that connection.”
Reiki Revealed
A Japanese tradition that focuses on the art of passing energy to another person, object, or situation, HHRM offers a free healing circle every third Friday at 7 p.m. It draws about 50 attendees.
“All people are healers,” Weaver says “Everyone has the gift. Universal energy shouldn’t be for sale.” Weaver’s husband, Scott Weaver, notes that Healing Hands invites people from all ends to come together and support each other. “Regardless of religion or social standing, they’ll all become best friends helping each other out,” he says.
Every Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Healing Hands offers spiritual discussion groups. “It’s a safe place to have your own ideas and opinions,” Weaver shares. “People are drawn to people who can help them. We have people come in all the time who tell us they have no idea why they felt like they should come into our store.”
“So many [woman] walk through this door, and it’s so amazing to see a glimpse of them leave knowing they’re empowered and feel worthy,” says Scott Weaver.
Now in their fifth year of hosting a radio show, the sisters will launch a new station called New Sky (an affiliate of CBS) and will go from having 103 listeners to over 30,000.
