The increasingly popular game of pickleball is taking over the courts, both outdoors and indoors. The trending sport of the season can now be played through all, winter and spring at the new indoor pickleball facility, Spitfire Pickleball.
Launched in December of 2022, Spitfire is one of only a few indoor pickleball facilities in East Idaho, attracting players of all ages and skill levels.
Pickleball has been described as a mixture of ping-pong, tennis and badminton. The game is fun to play, players get in a good workout and anyone can play.
“It’s for everyone. Kids all the way to older adults,” Justin ?, manager of Spitfire Pickleball said.
Whether you’re looking for competition or just a friendly game, Spitfire has an option for everyone. Players can sign up to play socially, competitively or reserve a court for up to a 4-person group.
Social play encourages players of all skill levels to rotate in on games vs. players with similar skill levels, while competitive games focus on skill-based play. Skill-based play sorts players by their ranking with other players who have the same rankings. “It's for those who want more competitive play and to improve that way,” Justin said.
Skill-based rankings range from a 2.0 to a 4.5 and are based on the player's ability to perform the game’s different shots. The rules of the game are fairly simple to understand, so if you’re a beginner don’t be afraid to get out on the court.
The facility emphasizes that anyone, no matter your age, can play. There are even clubs for the youth. Every Thursday, Spitfire invites middle school to high school ages to join a pickleball team. Teams play Friday and Saturday from 5-7 p.m., all led by coaches.
The benefits of pickleball range from physical to mental to social. “Socially, pickleball is the best sport,” Justin said. “Everyone’s always laughing and having a good time with each other.” Physically, the game improves players’ muscle strength and endurance. In turn, it can also relieve stress and improve the players mental state.
Paddles are available to rent, purchase or demo at the facility. “Members can try out our demo paddles to see which one they like best,” Justin said. With over 25+ paddles available to rent, there is an option for every player.
