My Cookie Decorating Adventure

For decades and even centuries, baking and decorating sugar cookies have been a popular holiday activity. Whether it’s Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day or a birthday celebration, decorating sugar cookies is an activity that friends and families can easily enjoy together.

The holiday tradition is so popular because sugar cookies are fun to make, decorate and give as gifts. And who doesn’t love cookies?

If you don’t know where to begin, you’re not alone. When I first ventured into a cookie decorating class, I thought it would be as easy as it looks, but that wasn’t the case. And although I wasn’t an immediate cookie decorating professional, I met new people, shared many laughs and tried something new.

Marissa Freitas, founder of Sugar’n’Sass Cookies, offers these cookie decorating classes for beginners like me, or those who are just looking for an activity to share with friends and family.

From start to finish, Marissa guides the class through her many tips, tricks, techniques and everything in between. “The classes are always geared towards beginners,” Marissa said. “It’s a great way to introduce people to it in a space where they’re not intimidated.”

The classes include a cookie decorating kit with pre-made cookies and icing, so you can put all of your focus on decorating.

A lot of people get frustrated the first time they try decorating and don't ever want to try it again,” Marissa said. “That’s one of the reasons why I like teaching classes. I like to teach people the basics and let them know it doesn’t have to be perfect the first or second time.”

The step by step class is easier to follow and is much more personable than it is to watch a youtube video. “I love connecting with a lot of people in the community,” Marissa said. “I meet new people who bring friends and it’s a fun social experience for everyone.”

Marissa herself was a cookie decorating beginner once, too. In 2018, she came across a clip of decorated sugar cookies and decided to give it a go. “I dove down this rabbit hole of the cookie world,” Marissa said. “I started researching how to do it, the supplies and techniques.”

After discovering her passion for it, she established Sugar’n’Sass Cookies LLC in 2019, where she takes custom orders and teaches cookie decorating classes.

For anyone considering trying something new, Marissa encourages you to try a class. “Don’t be afraid to take a class and to learn from someone else. It’s something that everyone can learn if you really want to and if you keep practicing.”
