May is here and I’m ready for grilling season. Hamburgers are a staple in our house all summer long, but sometimes we’re out of buns and I don’t realize it until I go to start dinner. I found this recipe a few years ago online and we changed it a little but it has remained a staple in our home. They are so soft and the optional sesame seeds on top provide a nice crunch. They are done in less than 40 minutes, which is the best part. Use these for sloppy joes, burgers, sandwiches, mini pizzas, breadsticks and more.
Ingredients
2 ½ tbsp. instant yeast
1c. + 1 tbsp. hot water
1/3 c. melted butter, or vegetable oil
2 tbsp. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. salt
3 – 3 ½ c. flour
Topping
1 tbsp. sesame seeds
1 egg + 1 tbsp. water
Instructions
-
In a large bowl of a stand mixer combine yeast, water, butter, sugar, egg, salt and 3 cups of flour.
-
Mix on low until dough is combined. If the dough seems too wet add ¼ c. of mor flour. Mix for 3-5 minutes until dough is elastic and no longer sticky to the touch. If it seems to be a little too sticky add the remainder ¼ c. of flour and mix one more minute. Cover and let rest.
-
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
-
Let the dough rest for 10-15 minutes. Scoop dough onto floured surface and divide into 8-10 even pieces. Roll into balls and then slightly flatten into a bun shape.
-
In a small bowl mix the egg and water together. Using a pastry brush, brush the tops of all the buns. Then sprinkle with a pinch of sesame seeds.
-
Cover and let the buns raise for 10-15 more minutes.
-
Bake for 8-10 minutes until the tops are golden.
Recipe can easily be doubled.
