IDAHO FALLS - Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the American Legion will be enacting a few changes to their rendering of military honors this Memorial Day weekend.
This year’s renderings will include an abbreviated ceremony at all cemeteries. The ceremony will include a simple three rifle salute, taps, and raising the flag, then lowering it to half mast. There will be no speakers, no food, no marching in of flags or personnel as in the past.
The schedule will be as follows:
8:00a.m. - Raise the flag on the Memorial on the river
8:30 a.m. - Fielding Cemetery
9:00 a.m. - Rose Hill cemetery
10:00 a.m. - Ammon Cemetery
11:00 a.m. - Lincoln Cemetery
The VFW will be doing the same thing at New Sweden cemetery and Ucon cemetery.
The American Legion will also be placing flags on all Veterans graves at 9:00 a.m. this Friday at Fielding and 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Rose Hill. The public is encouraged to attend and help as there are over a thousand graves to place flags on. This can take place with social distancing, so the flag placement will occur as in years past.
They will also place flags at the Vietnam Memorial on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. Flag removal at the Vietnam Memorial will be Memorial Day about 5 pm. Interested parties are invited to help with both ceremonies.
